In-Store Tax Refund Process
1.You must visit the Tax Refund Counter in person on the actual day of purchase.
2.Please have the 4 Items with you:
① Items purchased
② Passport (Valid entry stamp) or Visit Japan Web
③ Receipts
④ Credit Card (or a mobile app, used to purchase the items)
※The name on your receipt and credit card must match your passport
※For QR code/digital payments, please bring the smartphone or device used at the time of purchase
Airport/Port Procedures & Important Notes
Complete customs validation before departure
No Customs validation = No refund
Please arrive at the airport/seaport early.
- When departing Japan within 90 days of the date of purchasing tax-free goods, you will be required to present your passport and complete customs validation (at kiosk terminal). If you do not complete the customs validation, you cannot receive a consumption tax refund.
- You must be able to present all the tax-free goods upon request at customs. If even one item is missing from a tax-free purchase, none of the goods in that transaction will be eligible for a refund.
- If a consumable item (such as food or cosmetics) is used before departure, you will not be eligible for a refund.
- Tax-free goods that have been validated by customs must be exported without delay. If they are not exported, the amount of consumption tax equivalent to the exempted consumption tax shall be collected, and you will be subject to a penalty.
- Complete customs validation before checking in your luggage at a kiosk terminal in the departure lobby.
Refund will be processed after the customs validation
Eligibility
Those Eligible
- Temporary visitor (Non-resident, Staying less than 6 months in Japan)
- Diplomat/Official (No restriction on period)
- Cruise ship passengers and crew
- U.S. military personnel (SOFA stamp required for verification)
Eligible Purchase Amount
- Minimum purchase of 5,000yen (excluding tax) per day
Application Period
- Application must be made on the day of purchase, during Tax free counter operating hours
Participating Stores Period
- Please inquire at the tax-free counter.
Notice

- You cannot return or exchange purchases after the completion of in-store Tax Free procedures.
- Laws and regulations in some countries/regions may prohibit the importing of agricultural, livestock, and marine products.
